In February Saanich Council unanimously approved our application to re-zone 941 Sutcliffe. One of the conditions that we had to satisfy as part of the re-zoning application was a covenant that included provisions for a right of way for pedestrians, among other things. We have since provided a legal document that satisfied the Council’s requirements. Mayor Haynes attended an April CBCC Board meeting to encourage us to redouble our efforts to move the new building project forward.
We established a fundraising committee in February and have been meeting regularly to explore funding sources. On May 27 we submitted a BC Lotteries Gaming Grant application to pay for improvements to the current hall, requesting $156,593. We estimate that the earliest we could be in a new building would be four years from now, so working to keep our current facility in shape is something we also have to do. We requested funding to make the front door accessible, install a lift for access to the stage and meeting room, new lighting for the courts, a heat pump to replace the oil-fired furnace, and a new floor for the court area.
Going forward, we plan to write further grants to other funding agencies as we work to build support for the new building. We plan to approach government agencies, sport agencies, private donors, and our membership.
