CBCC History

The current building was built in the mid 1940’s almost entirely by volunteer labour with donated materials.  It was built by the community and for the community.  We have been in the Cordova Bay area for over 70 years serving as a community gathering place and sport and recreation centre. We’ve provided a place for people wanting to celebrate birthdays, graduations, marriages, anniversaries. And … we have hosted local and provincial sporting events from indoor soccer, volleyball, badminton, basketball, yoga, fitness, etc.

Over the years we have seen immense changes in our community and a major shift in how and where people gather to celebrate the major events in their lives and where people play their sports. This shift in the where’s and how’s of our population has taken its toll on our facility in terms of how the facility was being used. Partly due to the age of the building and with new facilities being opened throughout the lower island, we saw a significant decline in the variety of groups wanting to use our building. There was one group who, through a resurgence of interest, that became the major user of the facility – it was badminton. Today the facility is used mostly for the training and development of people interested in learning how to play the game and we provide the on-court instructions as well as organized playing times throughout the week.
